Wisconsin Badgers vs NC State Wolfpack Basketball Recap
Wisconsin 87 – N.C. State 48
Wisconsin (5-2) routed NC State (4-2) 87-48 in an impressive, confident performance before a home crowd at the Kohl Center in Madison on Wednesday night. Bo Ryan is now 66-4 against non-conference opponents on his home court, but NC State didn’t even put up a fight in this ACC/Big Ten Challenge tilt.
The Badgers were in control on both ends of the floor in the first half, mounting a 10 point lead with 6:50 remaining before streaking on a 15-0 run to close the period with the score 44-21. Jordan Taylor led Bo Ryan’s disciplined team with 14 points in the half, Jon Leuer had 13 points and 6 rebounds to dominate inside play, and Mike Bruesewitz had 6 points on his two uncontested 3-pointers.
Sydney Lowe’s young squad lacked energy or discipline in the first half, committing 11 personal fouls and turning the ball over 11 times. Poor shot selection (30.8 percent) combined with poor offensive rebounding (5 for the Wolfpack versus 13 for the Badgers on the Wolfpack’s end of the court) only contributed to NC State’s woes. Richard Howell led NC State with 7 points, but was sent to the bench with two minutes remaining in the half after being whistled with his third personal foul. Lorenzo Brown had 6 points for the Pack.
Wisconsin continued to punish the flaccid Wolfpack in the second half, extending their run to extend the score to 52-21 with 17:17 left in the game, NC State had not scored for more than 10 minutes.
If Sydney Lowe could find a bright spot from the score in this game, NC State performed better in the second half than in the first. His squad lost the first half 44-21, but only lost the second half 43-27.
Wisconsin put ten players on the scoreboard, led by Jon Leuer with 22 points, 11 boards, 2 blocks, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Jordan Taylor added 21 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Jared Berggren had 11 points, hitting all 3 of his three-point attempts. The Badgers were only called for 11 fouls in the game, shot 50 percent from the field, hit 55 percent of their 3-pointers, and hit 77 percent of their free-throws (20 of 26). Bo Ryan had a winning formula on Wednesday night.
NC State shot 32 percent from the field, and 31 percent of their 3-pointers with terrible shot selection, they were out-rebounded 40 to 26, and were called for 21 personal fouls. Scott Wood was the only player that exhibited any enthusiasm for the Wolfpack, scoring 13 points with 3 steals and 3 rebounds. Ryan Harrow scored 7 points shooting 2 for 12 from the field. Lorenzo Brown also had 7 points with 2 for 10 shooting. Richard Howell had 7 points before fouling out with 8:11 remaining in the game
There was nothing that the Sydney Lowe or his squad could applaud in this game, poor shot selection and lazy defensive efforts were abundantly apparent.
Bo Ryan may have some questions for his own squad, should he have more players that can contribute more than 10 points per game? Should Wisconsin have better performance away from home?
Wisconsin was not tested by NC State on Wednesday. Bo Ryan will have to find those answers down the road, but Sydney Lowe found some answers in Madison, and he should be very disappointed with them.
